Overview
Masseter botox is the injection of botulinum toxin into the masseter, one of the chewing muscles. It can be applied particularly to reduce excessive masseter activity related to teeth clenching and grinding.
Overactivity of the masseter can cause tension and pain in the jaw area and, over time, an enlarged muscle that makes the lower face look wider or more square. Masseter botox can therefore be planned both to reduce clenching-related complaints and, in suitable people, to support a slimmer lower face.
How Is Masseter Botox Performed?
Before the procedure the strength and size of the masseter are assessed. The person is asked to clench, and the borders of the muscle and the injection points are determined.
A local anaesthetic cream is applied to the area and left for about 15 minutes. Botulinum toxin is then injected with very fine needles into the determined points of the masseter muscle.
The procedure is short and the person can return to daily life afterwards.
