Axillary hyperhidrosis; the most commonly treated and usually best tolerated area.
Botox Applications
A botulinum toxin treatment that aims to temporarily reduce excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in areas rich in sweat glands.
Overview
Sweating botox is the application of botulinum toxin to areas with a high density of sweat glands in order to reduce excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).
Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the nerve signals that stimulate the sweat glands, decreasing sweat production in the treated area. It can be used for localized excessive sweating, most often underarm sweating as well as sweating of the hands and feet.
Sweating is a natural mechanism required to regulate body temperature. However, sweating that is far greater than can be explained by ambient temperature or physical activity is called hyperhidrosis.
Excessive sweating can cause visible wetness on clothing, the need to change clothes frequently, discomfort when shaking hands, and difficulties in daily and social life.
Before the procedure the area of intense sweating is assessed. When needed, an iodine-starch test can be used to map the borders of the sweating area.
A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the area and left for about 15 minutes. Botulinum toxin is then injected in small doses with very fine needles into the area of intense sweating.
Most people can return to their daily life right after the procedure.

Areas
The technique and the dose used vary according to the area treated.
01
Axillary hyperhidrosis; the most commonly treated and usually best tolerated area.
02
Palmar hyperhidrosis; as a more sensitive area, pain control is planned separately.
03
Plantar hyperhidrosis; technique and dose are determined according to the area.
04
Can be applied for intense sweating of the scalp and nape area.
Process
01
A reduction in sweating usually begins within the first few days after the procedure. It may take about 1–2 weeks for the effect to become clear.
Response to treatment can vary from person to person and according to the treated area.
02
The effect of sweating botox is temporary and varies between individuals. It most often lasts 4–9 months.
As the effect of botulinum toxin wears off, sweating can gradually increase again. The timing of a repeat session is determined according to the person's complaints.
03
Excessive sweating can sometimes be related to medications or other health conditions.
For this reason it is important to assess underlying causes, especially in sweating that starts later in life, occurs at night or affects the whole body.
Frequently Asked Questions
The aim is not to stop sweating completely but to markedly reduce excessive sweating in the treated area.
The aim is not to eliminate sweating entirely but to significantly reduce excessive sweating in the treated area. Results can vary between individuals.
The body's sweating mechanism does not work through the underarms alone. Botulinum toxin only temporarily reduces the activity of the sweat glands in the treated area.
An increase in sweating elsewhere is not necessarily expected after botulinum toxin. The compensatory sweating that can follow surgical hyperhidrosis treatments does not share the same mechanism as botulinum toxin injections.
A topical anaesthetic cream is used beforehand. Underarm treatment is generally well tolerated. As the palms and soles are more sensitive, different local anaesthesia methods may be needed for pain control.
Yes. Especially after underarm treatment, most people can continue their daily life. Short-lived redness, tenderness or rarely bruising may occur at the injection points.
Assessment
The area and severity of excessive sweating differ from person to person. Therefore the area to be treated, the botulinum toxin dose and the injection points are determined after assessing the characteristics of the sweating.
Especially in sweating that starts suddenly, is accompanied by night sweats or affects the whole body, underlying causes should be investigated before botox treatment.
