Trapezius Botox (Barbie Botox / Swan Neck Botox)

A non-surgical treatment that reduces trapezius muscle activity to help the neck-shoulder line look longer, slimmer and softer.

Overview

Trapezius botox is the application of botulinum toxin to specific points of the trapezius muscle located between the neck and the shoulder. It can be performed to reduce the activity of strong or prominent trapezius muscles and to help the neck-shoulder line look longer, slimmer and softer.

A prominent trapezius muscle can make the shoulders look higher and the neck look shorter. By reducing muscle activity with botulinum toxin and, over time, reducing muscle volume, a more graceful neck and shoulder line can be achieved.

This treatment may also be called “trapezius botox” or, in some sources, “Barbie botox” or “swan neck botox”.

How Is Trapezius Botox Performed?

Before the procedure, the structure, volume and activity of the trapezius muscle are assessed and the injection points are determined.

A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the area and left for about 15 minutes. Botulinum toxin is then injected with very fine needles into the predetermined points of the trapezius muscle.

The procedure is short and the person can return to daily life afterwards.

Eligibility

Who Is Trapezius Botox Suitable For?

Trapezius botox is particularly preferred for people who;

  • Have prominent and strong trapezius muscles,
  • Are bothered by shoulders that look high or broad,
  • Would like a softer neck-to-shoulder transition,
  • Would like the neck to look longer and slimmer,
  • Would like to reduce the prominence of the trapezius muscles

It is preferred in these individuals.

Process

01

When Does Trapezius Botox Take Effect?

The effect of botulinum toxin on muscle activity usually begins within the first few days and becomes clear within about 10–14 days.

The visible change in the neck and shoulder line due to reduced muscle volume may take longer to appear.

02

Does Trapezius Botox Make the Neck Look Longer?

In people with prominent trapezius muscles, the gradual reduction in muscle volume can help the shoulder-neck transition look softer and the neck look longer and slimmer.

However, neck length or shoulder width does not change anatomically. The result comes from the reduced prominence of the trapezius muscle and varies according to individual anatomy.

03

What Is Barbie Botox / Swan Neck Botox?

“Barbie botox” is a popular social media name for botulinum toxin applied to the trapezius muscle for aesthetic purposes.

Medically, the procedure is referred to as trapezius botox.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Trapezius Botox

The aim is not to change bone structure but to soften muscle prominence for a more graceful neck-shoulder line.

Are trapezius botox and Barbie botox the same?+

“Barbie botox” is a popular social media name used to describe botulinum toxin applied to the trapezius muscle for aesthetic purposes. Medically, the procedure is referred to as trapezius botox.

Does trapezius botox make the shoulders smaller?+

The treatment does not change the bone structure or width of the shoulders. In people with a prominent trapezius muscle, the gradual reduction in muscle volume can make the shoulder-neck line look slimmer and softer.

Does trapezius botox relieve neck and shoulder pain?+

Pain in the trapezius area can have many different causes. Although botulinum toxin has medical uses in certain muscle-related pain conditions, the cause of the pain must first be assessed. Trapezius botox performed for aesthetic purposes should not be considered a standard treatment for neck or shoulder pain.

Does trapezius botox affect muscle strength?+

Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the activity of the treated muscle, so a temporary decrease in trapezius strength may occur. This should be assessed beforehand, especially in people who train intensively or rely on upper-limb strength.

Assessment

Trapezius Botox Is Planned Individually

The volume and strength of the trapezius muscle differ from person to person. Therefore the dose and injection points are determined after assessing neck and shoulder anatomy and muscle activity.

In particular, for people who exercise regularly or actively rely on shoulder and upper-limb strength, the treatment plan should be adapted accordingly.
